How to Save on Your Next Caravan Purchase: 9 Tips From the Team at Cannington RV Centre
Buying a caravan is one of those purchases that should feel exciting, not stressful. But with new models rolling out every year, dealer sales popping up left and right, and finance offers coming at you from every direction, it’s easy to spend more than you needed to.
The good news? A bit of homework before you set foot in a showroom can save you thousands. We’ve been selling and servicing caravans in Perth for years, and we’ve picked up a few things along the way about how buyers get the best possible deal without cutting corners on quality. Here’s what we tell our own customers.
1. Set your budget before you fall in love with a floorplan
It sounds obvious, but it’s the step most people skip. Walk into any caravan show or dealership and you’ll be surrounded by beautiful fit-outs, that new-caravan smell, and a salesperson painting a picture of your next big lap. It’s easy to get swept up.
Decide on your number before you go, and decide it with whoever you’re travelling with. If you and your partner aren’t on the same page about what you’re willing to spend, sort that out over a coffee at home, not in front of a dealer. Once you’ve got a figure, stick to it. You can always add accessories down the track. It’s much harder to walk a budget back once you’ve signed on the dotted line.
2. Get your finance sorted before you negotiate
Most caravan dealers offer in-house finance, and while some of those deals are genuinely competitive, others come with terms that look great on the surface and cost you more over the life of the loan. Before you commit to anything, it pays to compare.
Getting pre-approved finance in place before you start negotiating does two things. First, it means you’re not comparing dealer finance against nothing, you’re comparing it against a real offer. Second, it puts you in a stronger position at the negotiating table, because you’re not relying on the dealer to make the deal work for you. You can walk in ready to talk price, not repayments.
3. Know what “on the road” actually costs
The sticker price on a caravan is rarely the full story. Registration, delivery, dealer prep, and any accessories you add before pick-up can all add to the final figure. Before you compare quotes between dealers, make sure you’re comparing full drive-away prices, not just the base van.
This also matters when you’re weighing up options you don’t need against ones you do. Some features are worth paying for because they’ll save you money or hassle down the track (a decent battery setup, for example). Others are nice-to-haves you could add later, often for less than the dealer markup. Knowing the difference helps you spend where it counts.
4. Do your homework, then get it in writing
Before you talk numbers with any dealer, know the model you want inside and out. Look at a few dealerships if you can, ask each for their best price on a comparable model, and if they’ll give it to you, get that quote in writing over email. Not only does this stop the numbers shifting later, it gives you something to bring to the next conversation.
If you’ve got your eye on a made-to-order van with extras, it’s worth asking what the price difference actually is between the base model and your ideal spec. Sometimes it makes more sense to buy the standard model and add accessories yourself later.
5. Timing really can save you thousands
When you buy can matter almost as much as where you buy. A few things to keep in mind:
End of financial year and end-of-year clearances. Dealers often need to move stock before June 30 or before Christmas, and current-year models get discounted to make way for what’s coming next.
Winter tends to be quieter. Fewer people are thinking about caravans when it’s cold and wet, which means fewer buyers walking through the door and more room for dealers to negotiate on price.
The last day of a caravan show. If you’re at a show and you’ve found the one, the final day is often when the biggest discounts appear. Dealers don’t want to pack up unsold stock and haul it back to the yard, so it’s worth making an offer, even if it feels cheeky.
Ask if a new model is coming. If the version you’re after is about to be superseded, the outgoing model will usually drop in price. A quick search or a chat with your dealer can tell you whether it’s worth waiting a few months.
6. Stay level-headed during the negotiation
Dealers know that stepping inside a caravan and picturing your next trip away is an emotional experience, and a good salesperson will lean into that. There’s nothing wrong with getting excited about your future adventures, just don’t let that excitement drive the number you agree to.
If the final price doesn’t feel right, or you’re not clear on how they’ve landed on a figure, it’s completely fine to say thanks and take some time to think it over. There’s rarely a good reason you need to sign that same day, no matter what you’re told. And staying calm and friendly throughout tends to get you further than getting frustrated. Most people on the other side of the desk are just trying to do their job well, and they’ll usually work harder for a buyer who’s easy to deal with.
7. Weigh up price against service and support
A slightly cheaper deal from a dealer two hours away can end up costing you more if something needs fixing under warranty and you’re stuck making the trip back and forth. When you’re comparing offers, think about the whole relationship, not just the number on the invoice.
A dealer who’s local, easy to reach, and stands behind what they sell is worth something. It’s part of why we focus so heavily on service and support here at Cannington RV, not just the sale. Price matters, but it isn’t the only thing that determines whether you got a good deal.
8. Consider last year’s model or a demo van
If the newest release isn’t essential to you, last year’s model or a demonstrator van can offer serious savings with barely any difference in what you’re actually getting. Manufacturers update models regularly, and once a new one lands, the outgoing version is often discounted to clear space. It’s one of the easiest ways to get more caravan for your money without compromising on quality.
9. Buy the van that’s right for you, not just the one that’s cheapest
It’s tempting to chase the lowest price, but the goal isn’t just to save money, it’s to end up with a caravan that suits how you actually travel. A cheap deal on a van that’s too small for your family, too heavy for your tow vehicle, or missing features you’ll wish you had, isn’t really a saving at all.
Take the time to think through how you’ll use it: weekend trips or extended lapping, caravan parks or off-grid, two people or the whole family. The right van for your lifestyle will save you money in the long run, even if it isn’t the cheapest one on the lot.
